Founded in Manchester in 2003, for the past 13 years Hatters Hostels has provided a base for the budget-conscious traveller to come and explore the independent hubs and haunts of Manchester’s NQ. With nearly 50,000 weary backpackers passing through its doors annually, Hatters has witnessed, and in no small way, played a part in the resurgence of the Northern Quarter and its increasing renown on the world stage as a unique, artistic cultural destination.
As part of the continued development of the area, Hatters is now undertaking a major refurbishment of its Hilton Chambers hostel on Stevenson Square, providing super funky boutique en-suite dormitories and private rooms. The whole frontage of the building is undergoing a makeover with the complete removal of all shutters and the installation of smart new glazing, canopies, planting and local artwork.
Justin Kinsella of Harcourt Architects who managed the project said: “This is a really important building for both the square and the area sitting as it does between east and west of the Northern Quarter.
“Working closely with planners and Manchester City Council, we are really fortunate to have the opportunity to design the property as a whole, creating a concept in unison that further elevates a landmark site in the NQ.”
As part of this refurbishment project, Hatters will also be opening a new all-day deli-diner and cocktail destination called West Corner, which will serve food from 7:30am until 12am.
The new neighbourhood eatery will take its inspiration from classic New York delis and diners, incorporating Art Deco design mixed with influences of Irish Brooklyn bars. The site will have its own on-street takeout deli section serving the best in breakfast and lunch eats.
Joining the new venture is Head Chef Romin Farahani as well as Senior Sous Chef Mark Chinnery. The pair worked for a number of years with The Hawksmoor Restaurant Group in London and Manchester, as well as many other well respected kitchens including The Lowry and Harvey Nichols.
Adam McLean, General Manager of West CNR, said: “We’ve created a menu that reflects our commitment to fresh, seasonal, professionally prepared dishes which use high quality ingredients, sourced from an incredible range of local suppliers including Barbakan Bakery, Out of the Blue, Gornall’s Dairy in Preston and The Butcher’s Quarter on Tib Street just round the corner.
“That commitment is extended to our carefully selected range of craft beers and wines, freshly prepared juices, superb cocktails and not forgetting our own West CNR blend of coffee beans from local roasters Heart & Graft.”
The whole development when complete will create 60 new jobs for the area. West Corner with nearly half of these will offer the very best in breakfasts, brunches, burgers and everything in between. This new deli-diner is set to open on Stevenson Square this December. Visit www.westcorner.co.uk for more information and job opportunities.
