Online and virtual experiences are here to stay and it’s how we use these as a supplementary offering for schools and not a substitute for a physical experience
Tell us a bit about your role and how it supports the business?
I oversee the day-to-day running of the Education programme at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London.
Schools visiting the Studio Tour have the opportunity to include a free cross-curricular lesson; I am part of the qualified teaching team delivering the lessons which offer an insight into the art of filmmaking. We aim to educate students about viable career options within the UK film industry.
What has been your career highlight to date?
Overseeing an expansion of the Education programme which included moving to a new state-of-the art classroom. Winning Best Schools Programme at the Youth Travel Awards was another highlight!
If you were not working in this sector what other industry would you have pursued a career in?
Before joining Warner Bros. I had trained as a teacher, but being a huge Harry Potter fan I now get to combine that passion with my love for education.
What are the emerging trends within your sector?
The emergence of and reliance on online learning resources is a trend that we’ve adopted. We’ve adapted our lesson resources to be able to share these wider digitally, not only to help teachers and parents looking for home learning content – we have also found new audiences for education through our social channels as people try their hands at costume design, prop making and graphic design. See our range of virtual learning resources.
Covid-19 has had a huge impact on our industry, what is the one thing that you have learnt personally or professionally during this time?
The importance of community and helping each other out. Something that takes a small amount of time and effort can have a big impact on someone else’s wellbeing.
As we head towards recovery what do you think the challenges and opportunities are for our sector?
I think our biggest challenge is to get educational travel back up and running whilst ensuring everyone’s safety. There is opportunity in finding new ways to connect with our audiences using our educational content.
How do you think Covid-19 will change our industry (if at all)?
Online and virtual experiences are here to stay and it’s how we use these as a supplementary offering for schools and not a substitute for a physical experience.
Name three positives to come out of lockdown
- Giving nature a little breather with the reduction of plane/boat/car journeys
- A more flexible work environment
- Getting to spend more time at home with my girlfriend and our two cats!
