Pan-European backpacker hostel operator St Christopher’s Inns, led by CEO Keith Knowles, is delighted to announce it has leased a second site in Edinburgh
The hostel brand has acquired a historic building that lies directly opposite its current St Christopher’s Inns site in Edinburgh Old Town, within walking distance to The Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle. Due to open in spring 2019 the new hostel will bring 140 more beds to the city including shared dormitory style rooms, private rooms with en suites and a new and improved hostel bar ‘Belushi’s, which doubles as a live music, sports bar and party venue.
Built in 1892, the new site in Edinburgh was formerly a popular Fruit and Vegetable Market owned by James Lindsay & Son Ltd in the 1900’s where locals flocked to the market to buy their groceries. Inside there are 10 historic Phoenix pillars inside to hold the structure of the 2 storey building, making it a beautiful site to work with. We found a top secret safe that was left empty inside the building; we believe the safe was used by the fruit and veg market traders to store their hefty earnings; but the only thing we found when we opened the safe was a solitary shoe.
We have decided to transform the secret safe into a modern private room, an exciting feature of the new hostel. We have kept the original safe door, thick walls and original safety deposit boxes on the side wall to ensure that the room remains unique and stays true to its original purpose. The sturdy safe door is made of steel and it’s 6 inches thick and weighs a tonne. The walls of the room are over a foot in thickness so the room is extra sound proof for our guests. We added contemporary touches including a bespoke tiled floor, an ensuite and a television.
Here’s a sneak peek of what the safe room will look like:
After the launch of the successful capsule beds at the St Christopher’s’ London Bridge site, the Group were eager to come up with another innovative room type for the Edinburgh hostel to showcase how cutting edge staying in a hostel can be for budget travellers. We created the safe room to take ‘hostelling’ to the next level and provide something cool and different for our young target market.
This new site in Edinburgh is part of a £2.3 million investment. We look forward to opening our hostel in Spring to provide young travellers on a budget a safe, secure and fun place to stay. St Christopher’s Inns is well positioned to expand further in the New Year and are currently seeking new sites in Europe’s greatest capital cities including Lisbon, Rome and Paris.
